Every dog is trained to his owner’s level of comfort. If it doesn’t bother you that Fido likes to watch television sitting next to you on the couch, you’re not going to make an issue of keeping him off the furniture. If it makes you crazy when Spot barks at the vacuum cleaner, you’ll be more willing to put in the effort to teach her not to.

One absolute for us is that dogs must be housebroken. It’s not the most pleasant topic of conversation, but it’s essential to us. We even teach them to urinate and defecate on command. It takes work, patience and absolute consistency, but any healthy dog can be taught to keep her house clean and be a welcome guest wherever she travels.

Puppies under six months old should not be expected to be “good” all day while you’re at work, the kids are at school and no one’s there. If someone can’t get home at mid-day to take the puppy out, exercise it and give it some lunch, it may not be the right time for a dog.

Years ago, before crate training became the norm in housebreaking, most dogs were “paper-trained” as puppies. I don’t really advise it unless you intend to make it the last stop in dog training. It’s hard to transition a dog from the paper to outside.

Small dog owners may like the option of a permanent, indoor toilet area for their dogs, a “litter box” for dogs. It solves the issues of walking the dog in inclement weather, keeping the dog warm in winter and works well for many apartment dwellers without immediate access to the outdoors. Since small dogs seem to need to eliminate more often, continuous access to a litter box may be ideal for some small dog owners.

Wherever you decide you want your dog to “do its business,” take it there at regular intervals, give it whatever command you choose to use for the behavior and be patient. I even recommend carrying the dog to the toilet area first thing in the morning, or any time you know it really has to go.

When your dog produces the behavior you want - don’t forget the praise. Let your dog know you’re happy with her. And when your dog does “mess up,” remember it’s your fault. It’s always your fault. You weren’t paying attention, you didn’t see the signs, you didn’t get the dog outside in time.If you catch FiFi in the act, make a loud noise to distract it (I tend to scream “No,” or drop a heavy book on the floor) and hustle the dog outside. If the dog finishes its business outside, praise him to the skies; “What a wonderful, clever puppy you are!” Ideally, someone else will have cleaned up while you’re outside. If not, don’t let the pup watch you do it.There is no punishment for messing in the house. If you don’t catch the dog in the act, it’s your fault. Just clean up and forget about it.

If you take a page from prehistory and “rub his nose in it,” your dog will learn that it’s bad for him if you find messes. So he’ll hide them. Dogs don’t have a “cause and effect” memory.A friend of mine has heard my housebreaking lecture many times and after four years his Dachshund Charlie still urinates in his dining room. Why? My friend won’t commit to paying attention to his dog, and won’t put in the effort needed. He thinks Charlie “knows” he’s bad, because Charlie runs the other way when Sam goes into the dining room. Charlie knows he gets in trouble when Sam goes into the dining room. Charlie has no idea that dried puddle is the source of Sam’s anger, and certainly has no memory of producing it. Don’t be like Sam. It’s easier to teach the behavior you want than fix mistakes later.

Watching The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway

I saw a local production of Phantom of the Opera a few years ago. I had a neighbor's boy in it so I would have seen it anyway but I was genuinely interested in it and then impressed by all of the talent that they had! It really was great and then I heard that I have to go and see it on Broadway too. So that's just what I did about a week ago.

I'd planned to take my daughter and the grandkids to New York City for some time and we thought this would be the perfect summer to finally do it. Anxiety In Dogs

A world without dogs would be crazy. It would be lonely for most of us if we lost our favorite canine companions. Fortunately, almost every household in the US had had at least one dog.

Dogs are animals that need special pet care and extra attention from us humans. Compared to cats, dogs are more active and showy to their companions. Cats just lie and sleep most of the day. It only moves toward you to get is dose of petting or to ask for food. Most of the time, cats would rather sleep or groom themselves.

Dogs are different. They are playful, they interact with other people and other dogs as well. They show appreciation to their owner, in one way or another. Men and dogs have become ultimate partners, helping each other... enjoying a complimentary relationship.

Dogs are also utilized outside the home, even in law enforcement. The police have canine units that help them in searching for different dangerous substances or objects. Sometimes, K-9 units are also used to search for missing people. If well trained, these special dogs can detect or identify crime suspects by tagging the smell.

Even blind people immensely benefit from dogs. These dogs serve as the “eyes” of their blind master. These dogs enable blind people to live relatively normal lives, allowing them to leave their homes and enjoy the outdoors much like other people who can see.

Dogs have different personalities. It really depends on the breed or the dog's family history. From being a puppy to an adult dog, they are accompanied by their human masters. These people are familiar to dogs and how they live everyday. The dog's everyday routine is usually dependent on their master's lifestyle.

However, some dogs experience anxiety that almost comes instantly when they are left alone by their master. If they are left alone, these dogs can become destructive, which is their means of expressing frustration or loneliness. This is actually called separation anxiety in dogs. Dogs can become restless and bored, and if they see that their master is not around, they may go out to chew on anything that they can get their paws on --- from slippers, to furniture, to other objects found in the house.

In fact, chewing on certain objects that have the master's smell (socks, shoe, the sofa, or even the door) is one of the many symptoms of separation anxiety in dogs. Other symptoms to watch out for would be continuous barking, uncontrolled “pooping”, and various ways to get master's attention.

Probable causes for such behavior often include dogs that were not properly socialized or dogs that have been living in different homes. With this in mind, owners should take a second look at their dogs and see if they exhibit such behavior. This will give them the idea that their dogs might be suffering from separation anxiety.

Dealing with separation anxiety in dogs can be serious if not threatening for your carpet or sofa. Begin with a no “goodbye” technique. Owners should not give their dogs any hugs before they leave the home. This will only make the dog long for more attention from the owner. Another tip would be to leave some toys or goodies that will help your dog consume its time and takes its attention away from its anxiety.

The global waste issue is one that we have to look at seriously. There are many of us, myself included, that believe that humans are having an impact on global warming. We feel at very least that we can all agree that humans have a net negative impact on their environment when they waste. As a result, I felt that it was my duty to be able to make a change in my own life for the better in this realm. I decided that I was going to make sure that I started recycling everything that I possibly could from my own home.

By recycling, I mean that I was both going to reuse th! ings that could be reused and put other materials into a recycling plant where someone else will get to reuse them. It was all about making small changes in my own home in order to show others that this kind of thing can be done. I found the task very difficult at first, but then I started to notice some benefits. How can you show your pet how much they mean to you? Well, one way is to take care of that smile for your pet. Did you know that your dog's diet can influence their oral health?

Humans need to brush and floss their teeth regularly to keep their teeth, tongue, and gums in good condition. Research has recently shown a link between good oral health in humans and a lower risk of heart disease. If good oral health can have such a profound affect on people, then it only makes sense to consider the impact it can have on man's best friend.

Pet care is vital. It is important to brush your dog's teeth frequently to keep plaque and tartar from becoming an issue. Even wiping his gums with a clean, damp cloth can be beneficial. Your dog's diet also plays a role in your pet's oral health. Do you typically feed your dog canned or dry dog food? What kind of treats and toys do you provide for your pet? All of these things can affect the likelihood of trouble with your pet's teeth.

When your dog's diet is nutritionally sound, containing essential vitamins, nutrients, and

As humans, we tend to want to overlook our snacking habits, so it can be easy to overlook the treats you give your dog. This is not a good idea. Carefully consider any and all items your dog will consume as this will affect his health.

Do you give your dog bones, rawhides, jerky treats, or dog biscuits? Maybe your pet prefers greenies or corn starch chews. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing, they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,

you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

Pekingese Trixie and The River

One day, we went fishing in one of our favorite River. Trixie was checking out the place. She was on her long chain, she thought I let her loose. I usually keep her on her chain because she's so hard headed, she'll always run away, even if I keep on calling her and it is so hard to chase her. She sure loves freedom.

There were a couple of birds flying everywhere, plus some ducks making noises, that's what she was looking at.

She's checking out the water. She looked like she was wanting to jump on the water. While she was moving around on the deck, I was teasing her. At the very shallow part, you can see small fishes swimming and some of the fish are showing up, jumping.

Our dear Pekingese love her fishing days. Even when we're about to go home, she looked like she still wants to wander around. We just spent a couple of hours there because daddy loves and enjoys fishing. Though I have my own fishing rod, I didn't wait much for a catch. I and Trixie loves to wander around and check things out.

The fishes we caught? We threw them back to the water. We just fish for fun.

Veterinary Visit

We brought Trixie to her favorite veterinary office today. She wasn't acting sick but occasionally, she yikes and belch. We were wondering about it, until my dear husband noticed that our beloved Pekingese has not went to the bathroom for (probably) three days. Because of that, we brought Trixie to her veterinarian.

She was getting anxious inside the car. When she gets anxious, she gets all sneezy and sniffy. I think she realized we were going to the veterinary clinic. She has been there several times already, she must have figured the way going there. Aside from that, we really don't bring her along with us, every time we go somewhere. She usually just stays at the house, unless we visit mom and dad, and their Japanese Chin. It was funny because when we arrived at the clinic, our Pekingese dragged my husband in and when she realized where we're at she then dragged him out. She don't like visiting the vet. That's why I said earlier that it's her favorite clinic. (Wink..wink)

The vet checked her, perform a proctology exam, and x-rayed our Peke's tummy. He told us that Trixie had severe constipation. We are told to give her something. If she still won't go to the bathroom tomorrow, we need to bring her back.

After the vet visit, we stopped by at the UPS Store. My husband has to send off something. We then visited mom and dad, and Trixie was so happy seeing her buddy (mom and dad's Japanese Chin). They were playing a lot, and couple of minutes later, she went to the bathroom like she always does, every time we visit Mom and Dad.

And all of us were just delighted and relieved. I'm sure our Pekingese feels a whole lot better.

Enjoying the Lake

Mom, Dad, and me went into the Lake. I enjoyed the fresh air and the beautiful sight. I would love to go into the water and chase the pretty and noisy geese but mom and dad didn't allow me. Mommy let's me wonder around though, and smell the pretty flowers at the side. She also let's me come closer at the very side of the lake to look closer to the geese. I really loved the place. I wasn't hungry because mom bought me some cookie and water too. I didn't see much kids there because we were early. There were few people fishing but I didn't know if they got any catch at all.

Thanks for Visiting this Dog Blog. This site is about pet care, particularly dog care, dog nutrition, dog health, barking dog, anything related to dogs. We are dog lovers and happy parents of a Pekingese dog. We also takes care of our parent's Japanese Chin, you probably will see some pictures of him in this blog later.

Before Trixie, we had a very good Syberian Husky. We lost him February 15, 2007, one day after his 10th Birthday. It was a very painful experience losing one we really love. He was our baby. He seem so healthy and fine and last week of January, we noticed him throwing up, and became so choosy with food. He did not want to eat his cookies, food that he really really love. We rushed him to the vet clinic and he was checked. They said, it could possibly because of his teeth or wants a change of diet. So we give him a softer food, we bought different dog food and glad to see him eat. The next day, he did not want to eat the same kind of food, so we try another flavor. He ate and won't eat the next time. We were puzzled.

Kodi
(February 14, 1997- February 15, 2007)

We brought Kodi back to the vet, he was X-rayed. Then they found a Rawhide in his intestine. The vet said, it was blocking his system that he can't poop. He was given some medications, and the next day, we were glad that he is able to poop and eat softer food. He seem fine though he still don't eat that much.

Few days later, he didn't eat again..we we're wondering whats wrong with him and he started crying at night. February 14, his 10th Birthday, We sent him to the vet again and they inserted a tube in him to check his stomach, the vet said, the tube was passing so slow. So they decided to have an "operation" the next day. February 15, he had an operation. Everyone was surprised to find a cyst as big as baseball in his tummy, pressing his intestine. That was why, his food won't pass so easy. The vet was able to get that cyst. Our husky was still alive. After the cyst was taken, the vet found another smaller cyst, and he tried to take that out also...and that's when our baby give up.

Our Syberian Husky, Kodi

I missed him, we all missed him. We were devastated but we did all we could. He was a good dog and we have great time with him. Losing a dog is like losing a member of the family. It was very painful.

We thought, we would never get another dog....until Trixie, a Pekingese came along and brought sunshine to our life (again). Dogs are like people. They're like kids, members of the family. They have different personalities. Each one is greatly special and can never be replaced. Kodi will always be somewhere in our heart that's something we'll never forget. And Trixie is reminding us how beautiful life is, giving us the comfort and companionship that a good, sweet dog like her, does.

The Legend of Pekingese

There are two origination stories for the Pekingese. The first is the most common, The Lion and the Marmoset:

A lion (the emperial guardian lion) and a marmoset (New World monkeys in the genus Callithrix, which contains 18 species. Most marmosets are about 20 cm long) fell in love. But the lion was too large. The lion went to the Buddha and told him of his woes. The Buddha allowed the lion to shrink down to the size of the marmoset. And the Pekingese was the result.

The second, less-common, originating story is The Butterfly Lions:

A lion fell in love with a butterfly. But the butterfly and lion knew the difference in size was too much to overcome. Together they went to see the Buddha, who allowed their size to meet in the middle. From this, the Pekingese came.

Another legend says that the Peke resulted from the mating of a lion and a monkey, getting its nobleness and coat from the former and its ungainly walk from the latter.

Because the Pekingese was believed to have originated from the Buddha, he was a temple dog. As such, he was not a mere toy. He was made small so that he could go after and destroy little demons that might infest the palace or temple. But his heart was big so that he could destroy even the largest and fiercest. Pekingese Dog

I am a Pekingese or Pekinese. I am an ancient breed of toy, originating in China. My breed were the favored pet of the Chinese Imperial court (the ruler of a particular period in ancient China), and our name relates to the city of Beijing where the Forbidden City resides. The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the mid- Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty and now houses the Palace Museum.

We, Pekingese or Pekinese dogs are also called Dogs of Foo (or Fu) by the Chinese, and how much we are revered can be seen in the number of Chinese artworks depicting us. We were considered a guardian spirit as we resembled Chinese lions. See picture.

Imperial Guardian lions

The Imperial guardian lions also called Shi, is the powerful mythic protectors that have traditionally stood in front of Imperial palaces, temples, emperors' tombs, government offices, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy establishments. They are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, and other structures.
